Story: 7.0 Art: 8.75 Overall: 7.75 Recommendation: BuyĭC and MeTV are bringing fans one of the quirkiest pop-culture mashups of all time when Svengoolie Meets the DC Universe, a series of custom inserts featured in DC comic books on sale throughout the month of October. Ink: Michelle Delecki Color: Jason Wright Letters: Travis Lanham Story: Dan DiDio, Shane Davis Art: Shane Davis The first issue doesn’t quite have me getting what makes Metal Men so popular and beloved but it’s interesting enough for me to continue. ![]() The horror version of Pinocchio is what has me intrigued to continue. There’s a lot that’s intriguing and I want to learn more but at the same time there’s little I care about as far as characters. The Metal Men look fantastic and the comic has a solid amount of detail. That design also helps emphasize the horror aspects at times as well. For as mixed as I am on the story itself, the art is beautiful to look at. The art by Shane Davis is solid with ink by Michelle Delecki, color by Jason Wright, and lettering by Travis Lanham. Out of everything, that’s the most interesting aspect and having enjoyed this meta story, it’s great to see it pushed along instead of dropped. There’s also a nice tie-in to the Dark Night event and the Dark Multiverse with the focus on Nth metal. What little we get of the Metal Men themselves is fine and they seem to be an interesting group, there’s just not enough of them. It’s actually quite negative and it’s hard to like him. And Magnus does not come off well at all. Instead, the focus is really Magnus and how he developed and treated them. The Metal Men themselves aren’t given a lot of time to show off their personalities. It’s an interesting start with a horror vibe about it when the rabbit hole is reached.īut, where Metal Men #1 falls short is the lack of characters that you want to cheer for. The issue revolves around Will Magnus as he reflects on the Metal Men, his time creating them, and the reaction to them. Storytellers Dan DiDio and Shane Davis deliver a spin on the classic Pinocchio with an egotistical spin. So, going into Metal Men #1 I was interested in learning more about these classic characters. This is a fantastic opportunity, and I couldn’t be more excited.I know very little, next to nothing about Metal Men. As a fan and a publisher, I never thought I’d have a chance to have Svengoolie in our books, let alone write the story. “I’m a huge fan of classic sci-fi and horror movies, and I grew up with Svengoolie. He is also someone I personally grew up watching so to see him getting this opportunity is thrilling, to say the least!ĭiDio, himself, is thrilled about this inclusion: The actor has always been a supporter of the Chicago horror and science fiction community and is known to be welcoming to casual and hardcore fans alike. I definitely identify with them, too after all, I have to put on my costume before I can do my job, too!” I couldn’t be prouder to have Svengoolie standing side by side with these iconic characters. “This is a dream come true for someone who’s been a life-long fan of DC super-heroes since I first got into comics as a kid. Rich Koz, who plays Svengoolie, has been entertaining late-night audiences since 1979 by delivering science fiction and horror to the masses “with comedy sketches, jokes, and song parodies.” ![]() But before he can make it to safety, he has to survive a showdown against the one responsible for these perilous pullets, The Joker! On the run from (what else?) an army of homicidal rubber chickens, Svengoolie gets some unexpected help from Wonder Woman and John Stewart, who urge him to get to the Hall of Justice. This is being done through “a series of custom inserts featured in DC comic books on sale throughout the month of October” titled ‘Svengoolie Meets the DC Universe.’ Each of these chapters was co-written by Svengoolie and his very own superfan in the comic industry, Dan DiDio, with artwork by Chris Jones. This late-night horror icon from Chicago has long been delivering a hilarious view on classic horror films to audiences, and now we’ll see him injecting his same humor into the world of DC Comics. In a move that comes straight out of left field, MeTV has teamed up with DC to bring Svengoolie into the DC Universe.
